Heavy rainfall expected overnight – risk of flash freezing with drop in temperature

Environment Canada has posted two weather alerts; one for heavy rain, the second with flash freezing.

HEAVY RAINFALL OVERNIGHT: Rainfall, combined with melting snow, is expected. The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall. What: Total rainfall amounts of 20 to 30 mm. When: Continuing through early Friday morning. Additional information: Rain will continue through tonight before changing over to snow early Friday morning as temperatures rapidly fall below the freezing mark. Roofs of weak structures are at an increased risk of collapse under the weight of snow. For information concerning flooding, please consult your local Conservation Authority or Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources office. Visit Ontario.ca/floods for the latest details. Water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas.

FLASH FREEZING WARNING: Temperatures are forecast to fall rapidly. Ponding water, slush, and any falling precipitation will freeze as the temperature drops. When: Friday morning and afternoon. Additional information: Rain will change over to snow late overnight through Friday morning as temperatures rapidly fall below the freezing mark. Local snowfall amounts of 5 cm are expected. Northerly winds gusting 50 to 60 km/h may result in local blowing snow. The combination of snow and blowing snow may result in poor visibility at times. For information on rainfall amounts, please see the rainfall warning that is currently in effect. Roads and walkways may become icy and slippery. Travel may become difficult at times.
