Anishinabek Nation Governance Agreement focus of conference

A historical document is being discussed by 40 First Nation member community leaders at a two-day conference in Batchawana including chiefs from the North Shore corridor and Manitoulin Island.

Anishinabek Nation Grand Council Chief Glen Hare says the proposed Anishinabek Nation Governance Agreement is a draft of a self-government agreement with Canada that recognizes the Anishinabek Nation member First Nations’ jurisdiction over their elections, language and culture, citizenship, and First Nation government management.
He adds the objective of the conference is to build a sense of unity and understanding about the agreement and what it would mean in terms of self-governance within the member First Nations.

A vote on the proposed Anishinabek Nation Governance Agreement is planned for later this year.
