Walk for Wenjack

In partnership with the Downie Wenjack Fund (DWF), the Elliot Lake Girl Guides are hosting a 5km “Walk for Wenjack” on October 22nd at 10am at Westview Park. They are inviting the community to come out to this all-ages event in-person.

This walk is to recognize the truths behind the history of residential schools and remember the children who never made it home, like Chanie Wenjack. Chanie succumbed to the elements at 12 years old on October 22nd, 1966 while he was attempting a 600km journey home after escaping from a residential school in Kenora.

Elliot Lake’s Girl Guides will be hosting a free 5km walk to honour Chanie’s life and journey, as well as all others who have been affected by residential schools. They have invited Indigenous elders to this event to speak and share their knowledge before beginning the walk.
