Hospital patient surge puzzles staff

This one has medical staff and administration at Health Sciences North a little in the dark.  The hospital is trying to figure out what caused a surge in visits to the emergency department on Sunday and Monday.  Normally the average for both days combined is 110 patients.  But this week the number soared to 145 which was 35 above the average.  The sudden influx forced the cancellation of 20 surgeries and left some people in beds parked in hallways.  The flu was ruled out as a cause.
