A fun hockey league got a shot in the arm from an Espanola club earlier this month.
Local hockey enthusiast Paul Kallioinen approached the Espanola Lions Club some years ago with the idea of a Pond Hockey program for Espanola. The program has grown, but not without its challenges.
Espanola Lions Club spokesperson Grant Lewis says the program involves dozens of players and volunteers who lace up on Sundays for an hour of fun and games.
He adds that rising costs, including insurance, have been a challenge, so the Lions Club has provided a cheque for $2,500 to offset the expense and assist the program.
