Espanola High School wins grant as an eco-school

On a clear path to attain Platinum Eco Schools status this year, Espanola High School has won a $500 grant to extend their composting programs.

Currently, all the organic waste from the cafeteria and the foods classes are “food cycled” in a machine that dries and grinds food waste into fertilizer.

The funding will go towards the purchase of a second machine as well as an indoor vermicomposting system using red wiggler worms as fertilizer in the school’s vegetable and flower gardens.

The grant is from Learning for a Sustainable Future, a Canadian charity that has been working for over 30 years to integrate sustainability education into Canada’s school system.
