Canadians will head to the polls after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asked Governor General Mary Simon to dissolve Parliament.
Trudeau met with Simon yesterday and she has said yes to him asking Parliament to be dissolved with the federal election now set for September 20th.
The election comes within days of Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam warning the country is in a fourth wave of the pandemic with case numbers rising in recent weeks.
However, Trudeau argues Canadians deserve to rate the government’s handling of the crisis and to decide whether they agree with the Liberals’ plan to rebuild the economy once the pandemic recedes.
As of press time, NDP incumbent Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing Carol Hughes is up against two other declared candidates, Conservative John Sagman and Liberal Duke Peltier.
The Moose will be hosting debates in the local area in early September.
Final details will be released once plans are firmed up to allow the public the opportunity to question the candidates.
Elections Canada says it’s working with local officials to ensure that voters will be safe when they cast their ballots.
It estimates this election will cost 610-million dollars to run, about 100-million more than in 2019.
That’s mainly due to coping with an expected surge in mail-in ballots.
Leaders’ debates have already been scheduled September 8th in French, and September 9th in English.

NICKEL BELT: Charles Humphrey is the Conservative party candidate for Nickel Belt. Crag Gravelle will run for the Greens and the federal NDP candidate is Andréane Chénier.
SUDBURY: Sudbury Liberal MP Paul Lefebvre has stepped down and Viviane Lapointe is their new candidate. She will take on NDP candidate Nadia Verelli and Conservative candidate is Dr. Ian Symington.
