Elliot Lake council defeats accommodation tax

The City of Elliot Lake will not be moving forward on imposing an accommodation tax in the community.

The original motion to impose a four percent tax on accommodations was made back in November 2019 before the pandemic hit.

It was delayed due to the pandemic and came back up for discussion at last night’s meeting.

Most of council stated it was not the right time to impose such a tax with the ongoing challenges the accommodation industry has faced in the last two years.

The motion to move forward on the public consultation and possible imposition of the tax was defeated by a vote of four to three.

If it had been imposed, staff had planned to take the annual $60 to $70-thousand dollars to create a new entity for Elliot Lake tourism.
