Wearing masks policy leads to special meeting – Elliot Lake

Elliot Lake councillors will meet once again this week after no resolution came out of its Monday night
meeting in regards to the mandatory wearing of masks.
City CAO Daniel Gagnon told council the city is in no position to enforce a policy for the wearing of
masks with only two bylaw officers.
He pointed out the Algoma Health Unit put a policy in place on Friday.
However, no one can force anyone to wear a mask. The onus is on businesses to decide if and how
they will enforce the policy.
Legally, the city can make the wearing of mask mandatory in city-owned properties and on public
transit.
The final decision on whether to give the wearing of mask more teeth through a bylaw will be made at a
special council meeting at 6:00 this evening.
