Elliot Lake mayor apologizes for breach

Elliot Lake Mayor Dan Marchisella has apologized to the council for a breach of confidential information.
The apology came about following a finding by the city’s Integrity Commissioner Tony Fleming of the firm of Cunningham Swan.
Fleming told council Monday night Marchisella had disclosed confidential information at a public meeting back on February 10th .
At Monday night’s meeting, Marchisella apologized to council for the breach stating, “At that time, in light of the situation, in an attempt to be totally transparent with the community about the entire situation, I did indeed breach confidentiality and I do apologize to the council and the community for doing so.”
Council accepted his apology and did not impose any sanctions.
Fleming said he is more concerned with the high number of complaints that have been made over the last two years urging council to find a way to work together stating the people of Elliot Lake deserve better and expect better from their elected officials.
A final figure is still not available for the cost of the various investigations with the last estimate being around $275,000, but it is expected to be higher.
The IC also said there was no merit to the complaint’s allegation that both the mayor and Councillor Ed Pearce had both been in receipt of confidential information that might have resulted in personal financial gains for them.
Councillor Pearce told council: “In my case, I was an add-on because I believe it was the only document I received and said ‘Oh, and Councillor Pearce was in attendance.'”
