Espanola council has rejected heritage status for AB Ellis Public School.
Save AB Ellis Public School committee spokesperson, Fred Yackman, had submitted the request on behalf of the committee last December.
In his report, Yackman outlined the history of the building, which is over 100 years old and asked for the town to consider it as the first official building on the town’s Municipal Register of Heritage Properties.
According to municipal documents, the town requested a legal opinion and also held discussions with the Rainbow District School Board, but the findings have not been released publicly.
The Corporate Services Committee recommended the request be denied and council accepted the recommendation at its meeting this week.
The school board has said the building will be demolished if a buyer for the property is not found when the school closes this June.
