A Whitefish River First Nation initiative has grown from a small business office in 1989 to a major financial force in the North and has been acknowledged for its contributions to Indigenous business.
The Waubetek Business Corporation has been recognized with the 2019 Indigenous Enterprise of the Year Award by the Sudbury Chamber of Commerce and Canadian Council of Aboriginal Business.
The award was presented at the conference in late January with corporation manager, Jason Peltier accepting the award.
Peltier acknowledged the dedication of Waubetek General Manager, Dawn Madahbee Leach, who was recognized in 2018 as one of Canada’s top 100 most powerful women by the Women’s Executive Network.
He says the indigenous financial institution has provided $95 million dollars in investment financing to more than 3,000 Aboriginal businesses and First Nations initiatives in a variety of industry sectors over the last 30 years.
