School boards in the Sudbury District, including those that serve the North Shore and Manitoulin Island, will continue to crack down on students who are vaping or smoking on school properties.
Smoke-Free Ontario Act inspector, Jean-Marc St. Jacques, is with Public Health Sudbury & Districts.
He says 138 students were charged for vaping or smoking at school last year and that carries with it a $305 fine.
The boards also have other measures including suspensions from class.
He says of those charges, 90 of them were for vaping, and the rest involved either tobacco or cannabis.
The Smoke-Free Ontario Act 2017 only came into effect a little more than a year ago, in October 2018.
He says if they receive a complaint from the school, they investigate and will continue to lay charges if the incident warrants it.
The policy is in force in all schools including Espanola, Massey, and Manitoulin Island schools, as well as Sudbury.
