UPDATE: Three children are dead following a single-vehicle collision on New Years Day.
Sudbury OPP says just before nine am on New Years Day a single-vehicle collision occurred near the Highway 144 exchange on Highway 17 when it struck guide rails.
Police say two of the six passengers were pronounced dead at the scene: 11-year-old Destiny Osagie and 10-year-old Flourish Osagie.
Police add a third passenger, 6-year-old Britney Osagie was transported to hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
Police add the other two passengers, a 10-year-old male with serious injuries and a 45-year-old female with non-life threatening injuries were also taken to hospital.
The 45-year-old driver was uninjured.
All the occupants were from Chelmsford.
The westbound lanes were closed for seven hours while the police carried the investigation.
ORIGINAL RELEASE: Ontario Provincial Police say several people are dead following a single-vehicle crash on Highway 17 near Lively.
OPP Constable Michelle Coulombe says it happened when the vehicle struck a guide rail on Highway 17 between Regional Road 55 and Highway 144 just before 9:00 am yesterday morning.
Coulombe says six people were in the vehicle at the time of the collision and three were killed as a result.
None have been identified pending notification of next of kin.
Three passengers were sent to hospital.
The driver escaped without injuries, one passenger has serious injuries, while another passenger has non-life threatening injuries.
Coulombe adds westbound traffic between RR55 and Highway 144 was closed for most of the day while police completed the investigation.
