Investigation into election expenses in Elliot Lake

Nine of the 15 people who ran for a councilor position last October in Elliot Lake are being accused of irregularities in their financial reporting by another candidate.

Former candidate, Mike Thomas says, “none of the candidates identified a financial institution for their campaign financial transactions as required under the Municipal Election Act.”

He adds, “It is the duty of the clerk and the committee to determine the compliance or contravention of the requirements of the Act.”

The nine are under no obligation to appear before the city’s Compliance Audit Committee tomorrow afternoon, nor do they have to send an agent.

The meeting is slated for 1:00 pm tomorrow at the Renaissance Active Living Centre.

The nine include elected councilors: Norman Mann, Chris Patrie and Sandy Finamore and candidates:

Other candidates are Tammy Van Roon, Luc Morrissette, Helen Lefebvre, James Pawson, Geraldine Robinson and Frederick Henwood.

At Wednesday’s meeting, the Compliance Audit Committee will first decide whether to accept Thomas’ application. If it’s accepted, an auditor will be appointed and proceedings will begin.

In his submission, Thomas alleges all nine of the candidates on his list filed an erroneous financial statement of contributions.

Thomas further lists nine different shortcomings or omissions in various candidate expense reports as grounds for his requests. Originally, he named a tenth candidate, Greg Lawrence, but later withdrew that complaint.

The meeting is open to the public.
