Aviva Fund Finalists Announced – Wikwemikong in, EHS out

Espanola High School did not receive enough votes to be a finalist in the Aviva Fund competition, but the project is still getting local support.

EHS teacher, Jayson Stewart, who is heading up the project, says thanks to everyone who voted, but he is happy with the publicity, which had led to some local dollars coming in.

The funds and donated items will be used to create a quiet space for students and staff in the central courtyard.

Still with the story, Wikwemikoong on Manitoulin Island is a finalist partnering with the local employment office and high school to build a greenhouse.

Construction/tech students, 14 to 19 years old, want to build the structure to provide Wikwemikong High School with the opportunity to launch an innovative green Industries agricultural program, which would teach students the benefits and challenges of creating a community-led sustainable food source.
The program intends to open enrollment for fall 2018 and the greenhouse could also be used free of charge by community members.
