Tory asks OPP for update on Sudbury by-election alleged bribery scandal

A P.C. MPP wants to know where the OPP are with their case over an alleged bribe in the Sudbury by-election scandal almost two years ago.  MPP Steve Clark says Ontario’s Chief Electoral Officer found apparent contraventions under the Elections Act involving bribes.  The statute of limitations to charge anyone under the Act is two years and Clark says that deadline is only five months from now.  A prominent Liberal in Sudbury was charged criminally in the bribery case but later the Crown suspended the charges.

The case involves quadriplegic Andrew Olivier who was allegedly offered incentives not to seek the Liberal nomination in Sudbury so that someone else could run.  That someone turned out to be Glenn Thibeault who jumped from the federal NDP to join the provincial Liberals and is now energy minister.  Clark has sent a letter to OPP Commissioner Vince Hawkes asking where the OPP are with their investigation.
