Highway 11 still closed due to forest fires

Highway 11 is still closed between Hearst and Longlac due to forest fires in the region. The blaze broke out between Hearst and Mattice, causing heavy smoke and decreased visibility on the Trans Canada Highway. OPP Staff Sergeant Baldassare Nuccio says the highway closure is only precautionary, for public safety. He also says the good news is that no communities need to be evacuated, as it’s mainly cottages near the fire.

The MNR, the MTO and the OPP tackled the situation together as Hydro One crews worked into the night to restore power to most of the affected area between Hearst and Mattice. This comes as Highway 11 between Strickland and Smooth Rock Falls was closed on Friday as the MTO made repairs to a sinkhole which had formed.

There is no word yet on when Highway 11 will reopen.
