Cancer rates in Algoma are higher than the provincial average

Algoma Public Health says residents in the district have a higher rate of  cancer than the provincial average. The health unit says rates were higher in six different areas including lung, prostate, thyroid and colorectal cancer.

The health unit says research shows that half of all cancers can be prevented through healthy lifestyles. In a study of Algoma residents over 11 years old, nearly 24 per cent smoke, 28 per cent drink too much and 59 per cent are overweight. Only 29 per cent eat five or more fruits and vegetables a day.
