Tony Martin gets Sault’s highest award

A former resident of Elliot Lake has received Sault Ste. Marie’s highest distinction.  Former politician Tony Martin has been awarded the City’s Medal of Merit for his tremendous contributions over the decades.  In the early 80’s when the Sault was going through massive layoffs at Algoma Steel, Martin helped found a soup kitchen to help those in need.  He entered provincial politics in 1990 and remained an MPP until 2003 and then ran in 2004 as an MP for the Sault and won.  Martin ended his political career, all with the NDP, in 2011.  Nowadays Martin teaches part-time at Algoma University and is a director of the soup kitchen.
