Many people know Janice Hobbs Martel for her ongoing advocacy for miners, in memory of her late father, but also in revealing how an experiment destroyed dozens of miners lives.
Martel tells the Moose, she has now written a book, Dusted – The Men of the McIntyre Powder Experiment and the Fight for Miner’s Rights, which will be released in early Spring.
Shocked by her father’s disclosure that he was forced to inhale aluminum dust at his mining job as an unproven medical treatment, Martell says she watched as his Parkinson’s disease advanced, rendering him helpless.
She embarked on a quest to determine if the two events were related and discovered a thirty-six-year-long experiment involving tens of thousands of mine and factory workers in North America and many counties around the world.
She says her book focuses on her journey to discover the truth based on archival records and freedom of information documents featuring the life stories of the men affected by McIntyre Powder.
The book will be released in April followed by a book tour throughout Ontario.
