Crown explains why charges dropped against political candidate

It was a prosecutor from Winnipeg who dropped charges against a Sudbury political candidate who is no stranger to controversy.  The Crown told the judge there was no reasonable chance of convicting David Popescu of inciting hatred and advocating genocide.  Sudbury police charged the 68-year-old last February for distributing offensive campaign literature in connection with a provincial by-election.

Ontario’s Ministry of the Attorney General’s office turned the case over to its Manitoba counterpart.  Eight years ago during a political debate, Popescu was convicted for saying all homosexuals should be executed.
