Judge approves $10M settlement in Elliot Lake mall collapse lawsuit

An Ontario judge says he will be approving a $10 million settlement involving the Algo Mall collapse which claimed two lives in Elliot Lake in June 2012.

A written ruling is expected this week.

After approximately $4 million goes to legal and other administrative costs, about 300 plaintiffs impacted by the collapse will receive financial compensation, including shoppers, workers and business owners.

The original class action was launched in 2012 and certified in 2014, with a proposal was endorsed by the Ontario government just over two weeks ago.

As part of the settlement, none of the defendants are admitting liability.
