The cost of dying is going up in Elliot Lake. Councillor Tammy VanRoon says in-ground lots will increase 10 percent while casket fees will go up 20 percent. While the rates might seem hefty, VanRoon says the last time fees increased at Woodlands Cemetery was five years ago.
VanRoon adds despite this, the rates are still relatively cheap, considering Elliot Lake charges only about half what most other communities charge for burial. Last year Woodlands Cemetery had an operating deficit of about $12,800. The new rates take effect January 1st.
