Getting cancer diagnosis for residents of Northeastern Ontario could get a little easier. The province says it will provide operational costs for a PET scanner to be housed in Sudbury. However, the public still has to raise the money to buy the $3 million piece of equipment.
In five years, a steering committee in Sudbury has come up with $800,000 dollars for the scanner. Right now people get their PET scans in Toronto. Once in place the scanner could examine about 750 people a year. The province’s share for the annual operating costs would be $1.6 million.
