GSPS not participating in federal government Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program

The Greater Sudbury Police Service is not participating in the federal government’s Assault Style Firearms Compensation Program.
According to the release, the program is administered by the Government of Canada, and participation by municipal police services is not mandatory, as the program is designed and delivered at the federal level.
The service has reviewed the available program information and determined that local resources are best focused on their core mandate of frontline response rather than administering a federal collection program.
The priorities reflect the same considerations highlighted publicly by many other municipal police services in discussions around program implementation.
Any questions related should be directed to Public Safety Canada.
They remain committed to initiatives that deliver the greatest impact on public safety – responding to violent crime, identifying and disrupting organized crime involving illegal firearms and drug trafficking, proactively addressing road safety concerns, conducting thorough investigations and supporting survivors and victims.
