Elliot Lake council has given staff the go-ahead for tenders to begin the repair work at the Ruben Yli-Juuti Centre, which houses the local pool and other amenities.
The municipal pool was closed for repairs for two and a half years, re-opened last December and had to be shut down again July 2nd following a mechanical failure of a hydrochloric pump, which caused extensive corrosive damage to the equipment in the room housing the system.
No details on the failure or the measures that were in place have been released since the insurance adjusters are continuing their investigation.
According to the release, council held a special meeting on Friday to begin the tendering process setting a budget of $500,000 for the repairs.
The city’s insurance adjusters completed the on-site inspect in late summer and have cleared the way for repairs to begin.
However, that insurance investigation continues with no timeline of when the final findings will be presented to council.
Council wants a definitive timeline with a phased-in approach, which would also possibly allow time for the fitness centre to also reopen when the pool facilities do.
