The Espanola Regional Hospital Foundation is introducing a new member to the medical team as part of its new campaign, a Patient Simulator.
Foundation public relations coordinator Terri Noble says a patient simulator is a lifelike mannequin that breathes, talks, and responds like a real person, which allows doctors, nurses, and medical learners to practice critical skills like resuscitation, trauma care, and even safe medication delivery.
Noble adds in a small rural hospital like the centre, they don’t see every type of emergency every day, but when it happens, they need to be ready.
Kicking off the campaign with a goal of $150,000 will be the focus of the annual Christmas radiothon set for Friday, December 5th in partnership with The Moose 99.3 FM – CJJM – Espanola.
She says a patient simulator allows us to recreate rare, high-risk scenarios, so the team can practice, make decisions, and work together before facing these situations with real patients. It’s a powerful tool for building confidence, teamwork, and clinical excellence.
The simulator will be used by emergency and hospital staff, family medicine residents, nursing staff, and visiting medical students — especially those training with NOSM University (the Northern Ontario School of Medicine).
By building stronger local training programs, we’re also laying the foundation for recruitment and retention, helping us grow our own healthcare workforce.
This is part of ERHHC’s broader vision: to become a Centre of Excellence in Rural Health, where exceptional care, education, and innovation come together. With your support, we can make that vision real starting with this essential training tool.
