The Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands is receiving $907,887 in funding under the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program’s Housing-Enabled Core Servicing Stream Projects to develop lots in Little Current.
According to the release, the funding will cover half the costs of extending Cockburn Street up to Manitowaning Road.
The township is waiting to hear if they have been successful for additional funding through a federal grant, which will assist in expanding the inventory of serviced residential lots in the town.
The province announced the funding on September 19.
Cockburn Street is a dead-end street that runs from Highway 540 near the western reaches of Little Current limits, but the development of the subdivision to Manitowaning Road (Highway 6) will open up the area for the creation of up to 24 new lots.
Engineering work will be carried out over the winter with a construction start date in late spring/early summer of 2026.
