A visible bloom of blue-green algae has been observed in Lake Apsey, and it contains toxins.
The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks have advised Public Health Sudbury & Districts that after testing samples taken on August 28th, blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) have been confirmed.
However, health unit protection manager, Burgess Hawkins, says there is no danger to the town’s drinking water supply.
He says the Espanola Water Treatment Plant has an effective barrier all algae and can reduce algae toxins found in raw water, which means the municipal drinking supply is protected.
He adds anyone on private systems should not consume the water and the agency will notify the public when the bloom disappears, and it is safe.
