Sables-Spanish Rivers Township councillor opposes solar farm

Mike Mercieca was the only councillor to vote down a motion by Sables-Spanish Rivers Council to begin the process of looking into a solar farm.
He says he did research into solar farms before the meeting and found concerns raised by other municipalities that had moved forward with similar projects.
He submitted a list of concerns to the company Potentia, which made the proposal to council ranging from environmental effects, including controlling vegetation and protection of water, lack of oversite, maintenance and disposal of panels, and the lack of control once built.
Mercieca adds it is important for community members to also voice their own concerns adding there will be opportunities for public input.
The company has just taken the first step and are now seeking approval to apply for the solar farm to be considered for the township, so there will be follow up meetings in the future.
