Seven new judges, three for Sudbury

Doug Downey, the Attorney General of Ontario, has announced the appointment of seven new judges to the Ontario Court of Justice, who all began their new duties yesterday.
Of the seven, three have been assigned to Sudbury, and all three are women.
Justice Tanya Farkouh Martin was called to the Ontario bar in 2005 after earning her law degree from the University of Windsor.
Justice Caroline Thibault was called to the Ontario bar in 1999.
She graduated from the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law.
Justice Kara Vakiparta was called to the Ontario bar in 2003 and earned her law degree from Queen’s University.

Justice Tanya Farkouh Martin practiced family law at Lacroix Forest LLP for seven years before joining Desmarais, Keenan LLP. In 2016, she founded Farkouh Martin Law, focusing on family law and child protection matters. She has represented children and youth as an agent for the Office of the Children’s Lawyer.

Justice Farkouh Martin is a committed member of her community and has volunteered with many organizations.

She was a coach with the Sudbury mock trial program, part of the Ontario Justice Education Network and the Ontario Bar Association Competitive Mock Trials.

She was one of the first advisory committee members at the Supervised Access Centre with the Sudbury Child and Family Centre, now known as Compass.

Justice Farkouh Martin has been a presenter and mentor for young lawyers at Colloquium Sudbury, Northeastern Ontario’s annual continuing legal education conference.

Chief Justice Sharon Nicklas has assigned Justice Farkouh Martin to Sudbury.

 

Justice Caroline Thibault was an assistant Crown attorney in Toronto until 2005, when she joined the Ottawa Crown Attorney’s Office. She has conducted prosecutions in both English and French in the Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Justice. Her cases included homicides, sexual assaults, firearms’ prosecutions and fraud cases. Justice Thibault was also assigned as the Indigenous People’s Court Crown. In addition, she has appeared before the Ontario Review Board and acted as coroner’s counsel at inquests at the Office of the Chief Coroner.

Justice Thibault is an engaged member of her community. She has volunteered with Swim Ontario and has been a member of Ottawa Swim Masters since 2010, competing in swim meets. She has volunteered at a summer camp and organized international student exchanges through CISV International, a global organization dedicated to educating and inspiring young people through building intercultural friendship and cooperation. Justice Thibault was also a course director for the current legal issues and trial advocacy courses offered to assistant Crown attorneys at Crown summer school.

 

Justice Kara Vakiparta was called to the Ontario bar in 2003. For 19 years, she was an assistant Crown attorney in the districts of Sudbury and Manitoulin, where she prosecuted all types of criminal matters including murder, sexual assault and other high-profile cases. In 2021, she became the North Region’s representative for the Child Homicide Resource Team that reviewed child homicide prosecutions. In May 2022, Justice Vakiparta became the Sexual Violence Advisory Crown for the North Region, providing training and education to police and assistant Crown attorneys on sexual violence cases and prosecuting complex sexual assault cases. In December 2023, she became the Crown attorney for the Sudbury District.

Justice Vakiparta has been a guest speaker on sexual assault and the justice system at a local secondary school and at legal education conferences. She was also a sessional instructor at Laurentian University, where she taught courses on criminal law and mentored many students pursuing a career in law.

The four other judges have been assigned to courts in North Bay, Cornwall, Belleville and Brampton.
