Strengthening protection of data at educational institutions

An education technology software company is ensuring its security measures will be strengthened following a cyber attack that impacted millions of Canadian students, parents and school staff. PowerSchool met with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada recently to ensure the company was taking the right steps in responding to a breach earlier this year that saw a hacker obtain names, contact information, dates of birth, medical information and SIN numbers of current and former students, educators and parents across several provinces and territories.
Officials say the company took the measures to contain the breach, notify affected individuals and organizations as well as offer credit protection and more.
The federal investigation has now been discontinued.
Officials add the decision does not affect ongoing investigations by provincial bodies who are also examining the breach from the perspective of the school boards and schools under their respective privacy laws.
