Old Mill Heritage Centre prepares for 100th anniversary

The Old Mill Heritage Centre in Kagawong on Manitoulin Island is preparing to celebrate its 100th anniversary.
Curator Rick Nelson says they will be hosting a gala on July 19th, an all-day event where everyone is invited to come out and learn about the history of the Old Mill.
Presentations at the gala will also include the vision to further develop the waterfront, known as Mariner’s Park, located next to the main building.
Nelson says the Old Mill was built in 1925 to process wood but only lasted five years being converted to a hydro generating station in 1961 providing power to the entire Island.
He adds eventually it would house the Billings Municipal Office, Edwards Art Studio, and then the museum.
He says they will also host their annual History Day on August 14th, and this year will display memorabilia, and feature over 100 photos of local history.
Nelson says they are also working on a 100th Anniversary Book on the History of the Old Mill, which will be available at the gathering in August.
