Highways 554 to 546 remain closed from Iron Bridge to Elliot Lake and Highway 553 in the Massey area due to flooding. Flood warnings have been issued for the Sudbury and Algoma districts, including Espanola and along the North Shore, including Highway 17.
The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority (SSMRCA) is issuing a Flood Outlook Statement to advise residents of current watershed conditions and potential flooding risks. Flood forecasting and warning are core responsibilities mandated by the Province, and this statement is intended to raise public awareness.
Current weather forecasts predict heavy rainfall beginning Monday night and continuing into Tuesday morning, with local rainfall amounts potentially reaching up to 50 mm. Snowpack measurements indicate a water equivalent exceeding 100 mm in the northern portions of the watershed, values notably above the long-term average, raising the potential for above-normal runoff due to rainfall and possible thunderstorms.
As a result, significant runoff is expected, which may cause elevated stream flows and rising water levels. Stream flows across the watershed are already above seasonal norms, and localized flooding may occur, particularly in low-lying areas, with possible water pooling on roads. While flood control channels managed by the SSMRCA are operating within normal parameters, water levels are anticipated to rise in response to the forecasted precipitation and runoff.
All rivers, streams, and flood control channels will experience cold, fast-moving water during and following this weather event. The SSMRCA will continue to actively monitor conditions and will provide further updates as necessary.
Residents and visitors are strongly urged to exercise caution near all waterways and flood control channels. Slippery banks, fast-moving water, and rapidly changing conditions pose serious hazards. It is especially important to keep children and pets away from these areas.
