Three candidates running so far in the new riding of Sudbury East-Manitoulin-Nickel Belt

The Sudbury East-Manitoulin-Nickel Belt riding has been formed in time for the 2025 election, with three parties announcing their candidates.

The Conservative Party of Canada has secured Jim Bélanger as their candidate for Sudbury East-Manitoulin-Nickel Belt.

Belanger, a lifelong resident of the riding having raised his family in Azilda.

He attended the University of Ottawa where he pursued a Bachelor of Business Administration, and several years of work experience in the mining industry, logging, agriculture, and presently in the fuel sector.

Other confirmed candidates in the new riding include Andreane Chenier of the NDP, as well as Liberal candidate, Marc Serre.

Chénier has lived in Hanmer since 2007 where her family runs their farm.

Andréane earned a master’s degree in microbiology and immunology at the University of Ottawa and a PhD in Biomolecular Sciences at Laurentian University and currently works as a bilingual CUPE National Health and Safety Representative and has held her position for over a decade.)

Serre was elected to represent the riding of Nickel Belt in the House of Commons of Canada in the 2015 federal election. He is the son of Gaetan Serré, who represented Nickel Belt from 1968 to 1972 under the government of Pierre Trudeau, and the nephew of another former Liberal Member of Parliament Benoît Serré. Abdel Bettah was named the People’s Party candidate for Sudbury East-Manitoulin-Nickel Belt but recently withdrew his candidacy for personal reasons.

The Green Party of Canada has not confirmed a candidate for Sudbury East-Manitoulin-Nickel Belt riding.

The incumbent of the former Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing riding NDPer Carol Hughes announced she will formally retired once the federal election is called.

The riding draws primarily from the current Nickel Belt and Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing ridings, with parts of Sudbury also included. The Canada Elections Act requires that the election be held no later than October 20, 2025, but it may be called earlier.
