Huron Shores expediting detailed bridge assessment and interim repairs

Huron Shores council meeting was a packed hall last night with the closure of the Dean Lake Road Bridge being the focus.

Town CAO, Clerk Natashia Roberts, says the municipality closed the bridge to all traffic on January 10th, following Kresin Engineering Corporation’s recommendations throwing the community into turmoil.

Two delegations, one representing their concerns about the detour, the second about the bridge itself addressed council.

BreighAnn Fairburn spoke of the resident’s concerns about the detour from Highway 17 using Eley Road and the conditions of the road itself, detailing concerns for safety, increased driving times, heavier traffic, and expense for travellers.

Mary Johnson spoke on behalf of the newly formed resident’s Community Voices Committee making some key requests including the formation of an ad hoc committee, a delegate from the committee be named to the Emergency Control Committee and timely updates to the public.

Following the presentations, a resolution was passed by council to hire Kresin Engineering to carry out a detailed bridge assessment immediately as well as cost out interim repairs for the bridge as quickly as possible.

The company representative pointed out that the budget for the interim repairs will not be available until that inspection is completed.

He says the assessment will be carried out over the next couple of weeks, and he will have a report for council at their next meeting.
