UPDATED AT 8:30 AM: Fire destroys apartment complex in Elliot Lake

A fire has destroyed an apartment complex in Elliot Lake.
Fire Chief John Thomas says yesterday (Dec. 12) at around 1:36 p.m., the Elliot Lake Fire Department received a call for a working fire at an apartment complex on Hirshhorn Avenue.
Officials say upon arrival, the fire department crew reported heavy smoke showing from the building and flames coming from inside the walls.
Crews worked all night to get the fire under control but heavy damage was done to the building due to the extreme fire conditions.
The fire department says two firefighters were sent to the hospital with minor injuries, and five family pets were rescued but one was lost.
Community groups are gathering together to provide clothing and other immediate necessities needed by the displaced individuals.
The department remains on scene and will be conducting an investigation.
ORIGINAL: A fire has destroyed an apartment complex in Elliot Lake.
The Elliot Lake Fire Department was called out early last evening for a fire at 22 Hirshhorn Avenue.
Several people were evacuated, and there are no reports of injuries this morning, although it has been reported that pets were lost in the blaze.
The weather made fighting the fire extremely difficult, with gusty winds and snow squalls.
Despite the fire department’s best efforts, the building was lost by nine p.m. but firefighters have been on the site all night to look for hot spots.
Multiple agencies are assisting the displaced.
There seems to be no cause known at this time.
The investigation continues.
