The Greater Sudbury landscape is about to change.
Vale Base Metals’ Ontario Operations Director Gord Gilpin says the company will be dismantling the copper stack and superstack at the Copper Cliff Smelter Complex.
He says both structures were decommissioned following the completion of the approximately $1 billion Clean Atmospheric Emissions Reduction Project.
Gilpin noted both stacks have been iconic landmarks for decades and dismantling them will be spread over multiple years adhering to strict safety and environmental protocols.
Minimizing disruptions to the neighbouring community will also be a priority. He says the copper stack will be taken down first and it is expected that it will be completed by 2025 while the superstack could take up to five years.
Gilpin is also reaching out to the public to vote for one of three proposals to celebrate the superstack: erect a monument, create a mural or a digital archive with a charity coffee table book with the final decision being released in October.
