Espanola council fills vacancy

A well-known Espanola resident will be returning to town hall, albeit in a different role.

Espanola council has filled a vacancy on council following the resignation of John Nadeau in June.

Past Economic Development Officer Cheryl Kennelly has been chosen to fill the vacancy.

She worked for the town for decades and retired last year.

Nadeau resigned after the closure of the mill where he had been employed, citing he has found employment elsewhere, but under governance regulations regarding possible conflicts of interest, he could no longer legally sit on council.

He thanked council and local ratepayers for electing him back in 2022.

Rather than host a costly by-election, council put out a call for letters of interest and reviewed them on Tuesday night.

Kennelly will be sworn in at the next regular council meeting and serve the rest of the term until elections are held in 2026.
