Cambrian College students experience Indigenous culture in Australia

They may live on opposite sides of the globe, but Indigenous students at Cambrian College have a lot in common with their counterparts in Australia.

A team of 20 students including Shylah Meawassige of Serpent River First Nation have just returned from an educational and cultural exchange after spending 13 days at the University of Wollongong and the Daintree Rainforest,

She says while there they learned about Australia’s Indigenous peoples, their history, culture and activism as part of Australia’s process of truth and reconciliation.

Meawassige, who is entering her second year in the Heavy-Duty Equipment Technician program says such experiences provide growth — personal, spiritual or emotional, so she is proud of participating in such a unique educational experience.

Cambrian was one of three schools Algonquin College in Ottawa and Georgian College in Barrie, to participate in the exchange.
