Day of Mourning marks loss of workers – Elliot Lake honours five miners

Elliot Lake was just one of many communities to remember workers on the National Day of Mourning yesterday.

Around 70 people took in the ceremony at Miners’ Memorial Park in Elliot Lake, including Mayor Andrew Wannan who officially inducted five fallen miners to the wall of remembrance: Giovanni Angaran, Raymond Cameron, Roger Desilets, Leonard Horton Sr., and Richard McCartney Sr.

Keynote speakers included MPP Mike Mantha, Health & Safety Specialist Sandy Ibbitson (EYE-bit-son) who spoke on behalf of MP Carol Hughes, Janice Martell, the founder of the McIntyre Powder Project, and Mayor Wannan.

Ibbitson spoke about the importance of heroes and remembering those who have gone before and set the standards for worker’s safety today.
