Sables-Spanish Rivers Township changes plans for renaming arena

Sables-Spanish Rivers Township has decided not to rename the arena in memory of a past mayor.

The late Maurice Cazabon passed away earlier this year and a motion was put on the table to consider renaming the Massey & Area Arena in his name to acknowledge the contributions he made in having the facility built.

However, Mayor Kevin Burke says he received a lot of negative feedback on the proposal adding there were a lot of other people involved in the project who should also be acknowledged.

Burke adds in the end, council will send a letter to the Cazabon family to ask if they would allow for Maurice’s name to be put on the plaque.

He adds staff has also been directed to research local histories to find out who other contributors were, their role in building the facility, and financial contributions to the project.
