Espanola hiring a Climate Action Specialist

The Town of Espanola will be posting the position of Climate Action Specialist soon as an internship supported through a grant.

Town CAO/Clerk Joseph Burke says the position is being funded through a Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation grant of $35,000 and the successful applicant will have the primary responsibility of developing a climate action strategy.

He says council approved the creation of the position at its February meeting with the intern working closely with the Manager of Environmental Services and Special Projects Joel Yusko in creating the Climate Action Plan.

Burke adds that strategy will focus primarily on the town’s own assets and operations, adding as it is an internship, it is also about giving someone the opportunity to learn more about municipal operations in the context of energy use and efficiency.

He explains having a plan will help reduce the local carbon footprint and better prepare the community for the effects of changing climate.
