Espanola council turns down Espanola Helping Hand ask

Espanola’s Helping Hand Food Bank had asked Espanola council to consider taking over the monthly rent for their downtown location.
The food bank had asked that the town take over the $1,500 per month rent and add it to the annual municipal budget.
The rising number of users and the cost of food led to the food bank making the ask.
However, last night the council turned down the request following an in-depth study of the situation.
Town administration and the council thought it would set a precedent although they are sympathetic to the position Helping Hands is in.
Council did agree to make a one time $1,500 donation to the organization.
Here is the motion: J.2
Recommendation regarding Helping Hand Food Bank Donation Request
Be It Resolved That: The request to cover rental costs for the Food Bank be turned down; and further that a donation of $1500 be made to the Food Bank for 2024.
CLARIFICATION: A deferral was made to allow for council to be provided with more information as to whether the food bank needs are being met. According to Councillor Aidan Kallioinen, the staff report indicates that a deferral was requested to clarify the nature of their request. Basically, to clarify whether or not the food bank is meeting its current needs.
