ÉSC La Renaissance students transfer 18,000 speckled trout into a new home

Since the launch of the Specialist High Skills Major in Environment at École secondaire catholique La Renaissance in Espanola last fall, students have been raising thousands of fish fry for release into local waterways.

Principal Jennifer Bernard says this latest initiative includes the daily growth of speckled trout eggs, maintaining them once they hatched and then transferring the 18,000 fry into local waterways in McKerrow.

She adds not only do students learn by doing, but they also accumulate specialist and cooperative education credits providing them with a minimum of seven experiential certifications upon graduation.
