Municipalities are opposing a possible amalgamation of two large health agencies.
Sables-Spanish Rivers Township council is the latest that does not want to see a merger between the two health units of Sudbury and Algoma that would encompass the Districts of Algoma, Manitoulin, and Sudbury.
The community is joined by the City of Sault Ste. Marie and Wawa, which have passed formal bylaws of opposition, while other municipalities are still grappling with the idea.
The province began talking in 2019 about potentially merging Ontario’s 34 health units into a smaller number but the idea fell to the wayside during the pandemic.
The Public Health Sudbury and Districts board of health brought up the feasibility of a voluntary merger between the two last year, so the matter is now coming before municipalities for discussion.
No timeline has been set at this time, but the health units are expected to provide an update soon.
