Off-duty police officer arrested, charged and suspended after incident in Espanola

A Greater Sudbury police officer has been suspended following an incident in Espanola.

According to the Manitoulin OPP, officers were called to the local arena on Sunday morning to investigate that after an earlier hockey game on that same day, a coach had threatened and assaulted a 12-year-old player from an opposing team.

No injuries were reported.

OPP officers arrested 50-year-old Melisa Rancourt of Espanola and charged her with assault, uttering threats and causing a disturbance.

She was off duty at the time.

As a result, Greater Sudbury Police Chief Pedersen has launched an internal investigation into the alleged misconduct of Constable Rancourt, and she has been suspended with pay.

He states while the allegations have yet to be proven in a court of law, the actions of one individual do not represent their members or reflect the values of the organization.

He adds a thorough internal investigation will be carried out under the auspices of their professional standards bureau while the OPP will continue with their criminal investigation.
