Town clerk appointed as municipal CAO in Espanola

Espanola’s town clerk has been appointed as the municipal Chief Administrative Officer following the resignation of Allan Hewitt, who held the position over the last few years, as well as being the town’s treasurer.

According to Mayor Doug Gervais, following the resignation, the council reorganized administrative leadership responsibilities including the appointment of Joseph Burke and the recruitment of a treasurer.

He says since joining the Town in 2021 as the Town Clerk/Manager of Planning Services, Burke has demonstrated his leadership, experience, judgement, and commitment to the Town.

Burke says he is excited and honoured to serve in the position and looks forward to working with the local businesses and community organizations to increase the prosperity of the town.

Burke is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario where he obtained an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and French Studies, as well as Laurentian University, where he obtained a master’s degree in Indigenous Relations.

He also holds certificates in Municipal Administration and Planning from the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario.

Burke will begin his new role on Monday.
