Private developer hopes to turn former Elliot Lake school into apartments

A private developer hopes to turn a vacant Elliot Lake school property into apartments as well as build adjacent housing units.

The former Roman Avenue school, which has been vacant since 2016, is situated on a seven-acre property and plans are in the works to turn the building into one- and two-bedroom apartments.

Antoine-René Fabris, a local lawyer providing legal support for the project, says the conversion is planned with Daniel Tarasko of Waterloo with his son, Nathan Tarasko overseeing the process.

According to Fabris, the company has already applied to the city for rezoning of the property from institutional to residential and the city has received the site plan drawing created by 3rdLine.Studio architects from Sudbury.

He adds the owners are also looking at another apartment unit adjacent to the present building with 50 units surrounded by 40 townhouse units.

They are now waiting for zoning approvals from council to move forward.

Council is expected to deal with the legalities in the new year.

Fabris says earlier this week they opened their doors to allow residents to view the site plans for the development.

Fabris says once the rezoning is approved by the city, the process will move forward, and more public open houses will be held.
